![]() There are three main causative pathologies which can lead to developing AGE: The degree of damage and symptoms of AGE depend on where the bubbles have gone, how big they are and how much damage to the blood vessels they have done. ![]() They commonly block vessels in the brain which is known as Cerebral Arterial Gas Embolism (CAGE). These bubbles become trapped in small blood vessels and can cause symptoms ranging from minor tingling, dizziness and skin rashes to loss of consciousness and death. In UK we now use a descriptive classification using the organ system affected.Įscaped gas: In this type of DCI the bubbles in the veins “escape” into the arterial circulation. Air passes directly from the lungs into arteries around the body and cause a variety of sudden onset symptoms which appear similar to a stroke, such as one sided weakness or loss of consciousness.ĭCI may be described as Type 1 or Type 2 in countries outside of the UK, Europe and Australasia. This can cause a wide range of symptoms including pain, weakness, dizziness or tingling.ĪGE: Most commonly occurs when diving as a result of lung overexpansion injury, also known as pulmonary barotrauma. These bubbles then cause local damage to body tissues or obstruct small blood vessels. When a diver surfaces this gas may form bubbles. DCI encompasses two diseases: Decompression Sickness (DCS) and Arterial Gas Embolism (AGE)ĭCS: Time spent diving underwater causes an excess of inert gas, such as nitrogen, to dissolve in the body. Also known as the 'bends' DCI occurs when gas bubbles form in tissues and/or the blood during or after a decrease in environmental pressure surrounding the body.
